Personally I prefer the aloof variety but I did enjoy what the author did here, also giving her protagonist quite a rounded character, much of it (Mensa, occupation as tree surgeon and fondness for cats) drawn from her own real life. Even before the murder occurs we see Cara struggling with her own living arrangements, stressing over the rooming and timetabling for the Mensa conference she’s trying to arrange whilst later on she shows demonstrable frustration and also romantic inclinations. Whilst Poirot, Miss Marple, Holmes and Dupin are all calm, collected and to varying degrees aloof from those around them, the author’s invention is anything but. In this case I was impressed with Clare O’Beara’s obligatory amateur sleuth. Whenever I read a whodunit I’m always interested to see what unique elements the author brings to what is a very traditional genre. She lives in Dublin with her husband and cats.
